Mariah Carey Season

An Interactive Visualization of the Top Christmas Songs

So, what is Mariah Carey Season?
People love Christmas music! You've probably heard of Mariah's hit song, All I want For Christmas is You, one of the most famous Christmas songs of all time! Every winter, that song tops the charts.
In creating this project, we wanted to visualize the top Christmas songs from the 1950s through 2017, as well as the artists behind the classic hits.
What are the top Christmas songs? Who are the top artists? What words make a staple Christmas jingle? Let's find out!

What are the top songs on the Billboard Chart?

Each bubble represents a song, sized according to its peak Billboard position reached (bigger = better!). Some songs appeared on the chart multiple times over the years and have more than one bubble.
Hover over each song bubble to see its title, performer, and album art!

Click through each button to see how many weeks the top songs spent on the Billboard chart, the number of times they appeared, and the decades they topped.

Now that we've thoroughly explored the top Christmas music of the late 1950s through 2017, let's take a look at the years where they were most successful, starting with your birth-year!

Now that we've explored the words artists have used to describe Christmas, allow us to write you your very own Christmas Jingle, courtesy of Rodney the Reindeer. Rodney is our in-house machine learning Reindeer. He's been trained on Christmas classics, and he can now write his very own Christmas hits. He's still very young, so he makes mistakes at times, but Rodney is training everyday to learn the ropes of jolly songwriting.

How this works
We trained a long short-term memory machine learning model using the lyrics of Billboard 100 Christmas hits from 1958-2017. When you click Rodney, the model takes time to build a new song, word by word, based on the styles of the Billboard hits.

About Us
This website was completed as a final project for CS171: Visualization at Harvard. It was created by Sara Kvaska, Jerry Registre, and Gustavo Coutinho, 3 undergrads at the University.
It couldn't have been finished without the incredible mentorship and teaching done by the staff, as well as our friends and Sara's mom, who provided many design suggestions! Thank you all!
